What Does a Plastic Extruder Look for in a Design Print?

You have a plastic profile that needs to be manufactured. Maybe it is a brand-new design, an existing part that needs a new supplier, or even a metal component you are considering converting to plastic.

So, what does a plastic extruder actually look for when reviewing your design print?

The more useful information we have at the beginning of a project, the better we can evaluate the design, recommend the right material, determine appropriate extrusion tolerances, and provide an accurate plastic extrusion quote.

Here are some of the most important things a plastic extruder looks for when reviewing a design print.

1. Overall Profile Dimensions

The first step is understanding the basic size and shape of the profile.

A plastic extrusion drawing should clearly identify important overall dimensions such as width, height, wall thickness, openings, channels, legs, radii, and other features.

These dimensions help the extruder determine whether the profile is suitable for the plastic extrusion process and what type of plastic extrusion tooling may be required.

2. Wall Thickness

Wall thickness is one of the most important considerations in plastic extrusion design.

Consistent wall thicknesses generally make a profile easier to extrude and can help improve dimensional stability and material flow through the tooling.

That doesn’t mean every wall must have exactly the same thickness. Many successful custom plastic extrusions contain different wall sections.

However, significant changes in wall thickness may require additional consideration during tooling design and production.

An experienced plastic extruder can often suggest small design modifications that make a profile easier to manufacture without changing how the finished product functions.

3. Critical Dimensions

Not every dimension on a plastic extrusion serves the same purpose.

Some dimensions may determine whether the profile snaps onto another component. Others might control how the part fits inside a channel, holds a panel, creates a seal, or mates with another assembly.

Those are the dimensions we really want to know about.

When sending a drawing for a plastic extrusion quote, identify the dimensions that are critical to the function of the finished part.

Understanding what is truly important helps the extruder focus on controlling the dimensions that matter most.

4. Realistic Extrusion Tolerances

One of the most important parts of a design print is the tolerance specification.

Plastic extrusion is a continuous manufacturing process, and plastic behaves differently from machined metal.

Temperature, material characteristics, profile geometry, cooling, line speed, and other production variables can all influence final dimensions.

For that reason, unnecessarily tight extrusion tolerances can make a profile more difficult and potentially more expensive to manufacture.

A good question to ask during the design stage is:

Does this dimension actually need to be held this tightly?

If a dimension is critical to the function of the product, tell us.

If it isn’t, allowing a reasonable manufacturing tolerance may make production easier and more economical.

5. Material Selection

Material selection plays a major role in the success of any custom plastic extrusion.

Common extrusion materials include:

  • Rigid PVC

  • Flexible PVC

  • HDPE

  • LDPE

  • Polypropylene

  • ABS

  • HIPS

  • Polycarbonate

  • Other specialty thermoplastics

But simply specifying “plastic” isn’t enough.

The correct material depends on the application.

Does the profile need to be rigid or flexible?

Will it be used outdoors?

Does it require UV resistance?

Will it be exposed to chemicals?

Does it need impact resistance?

Will it operate at elevated or low temperatures?

Does it require a specific hardness or flexibility?

If you aren’t sure which material is best, that’s okay. Understanding the application often allows an experienced plastic extruder to recommend an appropriate resin.

6. What Does the Part Actually Do?

This may be one of the most valuable pieces of information you can give an extruder.

Tell us what the part does.

A drawing shows us the geometry.

The application tells us the purpose.

For example, is the profile:

  • Holding glass?

  • Protecting an edge?

  • Acting as a seal?

  • Sliding inside another component?

  • Snapping over a metal part?

  • Supporting weight?

  • Being used outdoors?

  • Installed around a swimming pool or marine environment?

  • Serving as a decorative trim?

  • Replacing an existing metal component?

Understanding how the profile functions can help identify potential design improvements before plastic extrusion tooling is manufactured.

Sometimes a small change to the plastic extrusion design can make the profile easier to produce, improve performance, reduce material usage, or lower overall manufacturing costs.

7. Color and Appearance Requirements

If color matters, include that information with your RFQ.

A customer may require a standard color such as white, black, gray, or clear, or the project may require a custom color match.

The print or RFQ should also identify important appearance requirements such as gloss level, texture, transparency, or other cosmetic expectations.

If an exact color match is required, providing a physical sample or recognized color reference can help during development.

8. Cut Length and Secondary Operations

Extrusions can often be supplied in continuous coils, straight lengths, or pieces cut to a specific dimension.

Your RFQ should indicate the required finished length.

Also tell the extruder about any secondary operations that may be required, including:

  • Punching

  • Drilling

  • Notching

  • Printing

  • Adhesive application

  • Taping

  • Fabrication

  • Special packaging

Understanding these requirements early allows the entire manufacturing process to be considered when preparing the quote.

9. Estimated Annual Volume

Quantity matters.

A profile requiring 5,000 feet per year may be approached differently from one requiring several million feet.

Providing realistic estimated annual usage helps the extruder evaluate tooling, production methods, material purchasing, packaging, and overall pricing.

Even if you don’t know the exact quantity, providing an estimated range is helpful.

10. Mating Components Can Be Extremely Helpful

If the extrusion fits into, around, or against another component, let the extruder know.

Whenever possible, provide a drawing or sample of the mating component.

This is especially important for profiles that snap, slide, lock, seal, or fit into another part.

Knowing how the components interact can help the extruder identify which profile dimensions are truly critical.

Before You Send Your Plastic Extrusion RFQ

Providing the following information can help speed up the quoting and design review process:

  • Profile drawing

  • Overall dimensions

  • Wall thicknesses

  • Critical dimensions

  • Required tolerances

  • Material or performance requirements

  • Color

  • Finished length

  • Secondary operations

  • Estimated annual volume

  • Mating component information

  • Description of the application

Don’t worry if you don’t have every answer.
